If you use hearing aids, it’s important to give them a little extra love and care during the summer to keep them working and you hearing your best.
Do I Need Hearing Aids?
Hearing loss is a very common condition. In fact, approximately 15% of American adults aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing. It’s a condition that becomes more common with age, and symptoms can gradually appear over the course of years.
If you’ve noticed that you’re having trouble following conversations or asking people to repeat themselves more frequently, consider scheduling an appointment for a hearing test. If hearing loss is discovered, a qualified audiologist will work with you to discuss your hearing aid options and program them to provide you with an optimal listening experience this summer and beyond.
Protect Your Hearing Aids During These Three Summer Activities
- Swimming. Hearing aids are resistant to some moisture, but they are not waterproof. So do not wear them when you take any dips in pools or lakes or any other body of water. If you’re taking the family to the Monroe Athletic Club for a swim, make sure to bring a waterproof case that you can put your hearing aids in before getting in the water. Also, always dry off thoroughly before putting your hearing aids back on.
- Exercising in the heat. Summers in Louisiana mean plenty of heat and humidity. If you like to go for walks or runs outside, play golf or do other outdoor physical activities, you’re going to work up a sweat. Thankfully, hearing aids are sweat-resistant, so you can wear them while you exercise. Just be sure to take them out and wipe them off afterward to avoid moisture buildup, and consider using a sweatband or hearing aid sleeve to avoid excessive perspiration from getting on your device.
- Traveling. Summer is a popular time to travel. Thankfully it’s easy to travel with your hearing aids with a little planning ahead. Put together a hearing aid travel kit that includes things like extra batteries or your charger, a hearing aid dryer and tools to clean your device, a waterproof case and any other accessories you need to care for your hearing aids when away from home.
